San Marcos’ Story
San Marcos was originally known as Los Encinitos by the Luiseño people. Spanish explorers arrived in 1797 at Mission San Luis Rey. Rancho Los Vallecitos de San Marcos received its concession in 1840. Farming surged flourishing in the 1880s, with strawberries and poultry taking the lead. John H. Barham established the town in 1887. A post office and railroad were built later, which aided growth. It was incorporated in 1963 and flourished rapidly following WWII. CSUSM, which established in 1989, has shaped its present identity. In 2025, historic sites coexist with modern advancements.
