A History of Growth and Independence
Early Beginnings
The Nisenan people were the original inhabitants of the area. Spanish explorers and settlers arrived during the nineteenth century. The property was used for both grazing and cultivation. Citrus groves and wheat farms were commonplace.
The Citrus Boom
The region’s name is derived from its agricultural background. In the late 1800s, farmers established large citrus plantations. The excellent soil was great for growing oranges and lemons. The term “Heights” refers to the area’s somewhat raised topography.

Residents opted to incorporate in 1997. Citrus Heights is Sacramento County’s newest city. This allowed the community more local control over its future.
