San Cha, RedCat, Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles-based composer, musician, and performance artist San Cha unveils a new experimental opera. In this production, San Cha portrays Dolores, a woman of modest means who, after marrying the affluent Salvador, becomes ensnared in a cycle of jealousy and abuse.
Esperanza, a genderless entity embodying light and empowerment, visits Dolores, providing her with the strength to recognize her true worth. This audacious new work draws inspiration from various influences, including the life of Mexican immigrant families, the Catholic church choir, and the vibrant Bay Area drag scene, seamlessly blending the dramatic and lavish operatic style with the emotional intensity of telenovelas. The compositions, which integrate ranchera, cumbia, punk, classical, and electro music, are performed by an exceptional cast led by Darian Donovan Thomas, alongside stefa marin alarcon, Lu Coy, Kyle Kidd, Carolina Oliveros, and Phong Tran. The title, Inebria Me, alludes to the intoxicating, transcendent, and sublime nature of love that triumphs over all obstacles.
On October 17, there will be a post-show Q&A session featuring San Cha, moderated by Katy Dammers, the Deputy Director and Chief Curator of Performing Arts at REDCAT.
The performance is presented in Spanish with English supertitles.
Please be advised: Inebria Me includes strobe lights, flashing lights, nudity, and mature themes.
