Islands in the Sea, The Luckman, Los Angeles, CA
The world premiere of Raiford Rogers’ Islands in the Sea, accompanied by the music of Arvo Pärt and inspired by the quote from William James.
“We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface but connected in the deep.” This work delves into the invisible forces that bind us together.
The ballet showcases choreography set to a selection of Pärt’s most poignant compositions — including Fratres, Passacaglia, Pari Intervallo, Vater Unser, Spiegel im Spiegel, and Für Alina.
Glassworks, which is based on Philip Glass’ renowned composition of the same title, along with Restless, which features music by Zbyněk Matějů, combine with the company’s distinctive rhythmic elegance to round out the program.
Specifically recorded for this performance, the score includes pianist Hui Wu, violinist Stephanie Yu, and cellist Elizabeth Wright. Large-scale projections by the esteemed visual artist Mike Nava establish a rich, multi-sensory atmosphere where dance, music, and art intersect.
