Subhumans, Harlows, Sacramento, CA
Subhumans are regarded as one of the most significant bands emerging from the UK Anarcho-Punk movement of the 1980s, positioned alongside Crass and Conflict, and they remain just as pertinent today as they were during the bleakest periods of Thatcher’s Britain.
You may choose to categorize them as Punk, UK82, Crusty, etc., which highlights their appeal and the reason for their enduring popularity; the band embodies non-conformity and resonates with audiences across various scenes.
Established in 1980, they began recording and distributing a series of live and demo cassette tapes under their own Bluurg label, continuing to produce music throughout the 1980s – creating an impressive back catalog that has truly withstood the test of time. Their debut LP, ‘The Day the Country Died’ (1983), influenced by Orwellian themes, is widely regarded as a classic and has sold over 100,000 copies. The second album, ‘From the Cradle to the Grave,’ was released the following year (1984), and while it maintains the same energetic pace, it signifies a notable musical evolution for the band. In 1985, Subhumans disbanded, citing typical musical disagreements, although they had managed to release a third LP, perhaps ironically titled, ‘Worlds Apart.’ A final EP, ‘29:29 Split Vision,’ was released posthumously in 1986, further showcasing the significant musical progression the band had achieved since their early days.
