Different Talking, the sixth and, to date, the finest album by the New York City indie-rock quartet Frankie Cosmos, appears to transcend both time and space, much like we all do. It comprises a series of fragments and memories, recollected locations, and reinterpreted emotions that culminate in a clear, resonant entirety: a robust, worldly indie-rock album that addresses aging and the passage of time while still managing to feel distinctly relevant.
Frankie Cosmos’ lead vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Greta Kline has long been recognized as one of the most skilled and essential writers in contemporary indie music. However, on Different Talking, her lyrics exhibit a slight softening; the wry cynicism that characterized her recent works now yields to a recognition of the profound and necessary fallibility of the human mind and heart.
