Diggin Dirt, Harlows, Sacramento, CA
From behind the redwood curtain of Humboldt County, California, the seven-piece funk-soul band Diggin Dirt has established itself as a live party that should not be overlooked.
Carving their own path, Diggin Dirt has experienced consistent growth over the past few years, featuring multiple national tours and festival appearances at Jam Cruise, High Sierra, Hulaween, Same Same but Different, Live Oak, Cascade Equinox, Joshua Tree Music Festival, and many others.
According to a 2024 Jam Cruise writer, “This was the soul music I grew up with in the ‘60s and ‘70s, but I admit I wasn’t anticipating [Diggin Dirt] to deliver such an intense performance. This group is incredibly tight, and Zach Alder may be the finest soul shouter I’ve ever encountered, and I’ve heard quite a few.”
Their captivating sound is driven by blazing horns, scorching guitars, and a relentlessly propulsive rhythm section, with the band’s frontman elevating the ensemble into extraordinary realms with his vocal prowess, charisma, and innate soulfulness. Echoing the styles of James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Otis Redding, or Tower of Power, the band’s sound is both recognizable and refreshingly innovative, blending psychedelic rock, Motown soul, afrobeat, and even reggae over a robust foundation of late-60s inspired funk.
