Yvette Young, a guitarist, lyricist, and composer, created Covet as a form of rebellion against and expansion of her classical heritage.
The band was formed in the Bay Area, California, with the goal of blending sumptuous post-rock soundscapes with the more intricate components of progressive music, putting melody and emotion first, and improving with each release. The name was inspired by Yvette’s love of the band Basement, as well as the meaning of the word: to want something very badly, which is how she feels about the entire creative process: a type of yearning.
