Shane emerged as sombr through a makeshift recording studio set up in his bedroom.
The now 19-year-old native of the Lower East Side refined his skills at New York’s LaGuardia High, a public performing arts institution renowned for inspiring the film Fame, where he spent his days immersed in classical music and his nights exploring young love, skateboarding, and generally finding himself in mischief.
When the COVID pandemic struck, his own music served as a refuge for the young artist from the physical and social isolation imposed by the crisis. Sombr self-taught in music production and dedicated himself to obsessively crafting emotional indie-rock anthems.
His track “Caroline” (released in 2022) became an anthem for sad girls, capturing the attention of the internet. (“Caroline” was self-produced, self-written, and self-released when sombr was merely 16, and it has since garnered over 40 million streams on Spotify.)
Sombr has consistently released EPs and singles since then, now achieving over 2 million streams daily and nearing 7 million monthly listeners on Spotify. His songs “would’ve been you,” “do I ever cross your mind,” and his latest single “back to friends” have emerged as indie-rock sensations, and if you’ve been active online, you are likely familiar with these tracks. Sombr and Rachel Chinouriri (2025 Britt Nominee, direct support for Sabrina Carpenter on her forthcoming tour) are set to release a remix/collaboration on February 7 of Rachel’s hit “All I Ever Asked.”
This trajectory feels like a once-in-a-generation phenomenon. With his extraordinary musical instincts and an unquenchable thirst for experimenting with new sounds, sombr radiates longevity. This was further highlighted during his headline 2024 North American tour. Concert Chronicles remarked, “sombr did not disappoint, delivering a performance that was both mesmerizing and electrifying” regarding his live show, with My Life In Sound adding, “If you have the chance to see him live, do not miss it.”
