Emam has been a disciple of Maha Avatar Babaji since 1978, when he first traveled to India to Babaji’s ashram in the Himalayan foothills. That’s when he began playing and singing kirtan. He has also been a tabla student since 1977, having had the opportunity to learn with Ustad Alla Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain, two of the grand masters of the instrument. Emam has been playing and creating music for over 35 years. He is the founder of the music label Eternal Music.
Mahalakshmi is a vocalist, composer, music producer, and sound yogini. She began her spiritual path with music, first learning Western flute and then discovering a doorway to the soul via songs. Mahalakshmi’s skill on the flute influences her voice approach, resulting in a distinct and relaxing sound. While she is mostly self-taught in singing, piano, and songwriting, Mahalakshmi has received Indian classical music lessons from Ustad Chhote Rahimat Khan, Geetika Varde, and her husband and music partner Emam. In their band ‘MahaMaya Band’, she and Emam perform creative world fusion music that combines Indian classical with rock and jazz. The couple can also be seen leading Kirtan groups with their band, “Rhythm & Mantra.”
She and Emam spend the majority of the year in Goa, India.
