Nourished By Time with Zsela, The Passionate Ones Tour, El Rey Theatre, Los Angeles, CA
Marcus Brown, who was born in Baltimore, is the musical artist behind Nourished By Time. His breakthrough debut albums Erotic Probiotic 2 (2023) and Catching Chickens (2024) showcase his emotionally charged fusion of post-punk, New Wave, R&B, electro-funk, and experimental indie pop, which reflects a profoundly personal and keenly observational voice.
Brown, a Metamodernist, creates music that explores themes of love, work, existentialism, dreams, disillusionment, and hope in a way that is both soulful and subversive. The Passionate Ones, Nourished By Time’s debut full-length album on XL Recordings, will be released this summer. Written, produced, mixed, and performed by Brown alone, The Passionate Ones is a twelve-track cathartic sermon that was inspired by the dark side of late-stage capitalism and was created in Baltimore, London, and New York City.
Nourished By Time, which was first recorded in Koreatown, Los Angeles, in late 2019, became Brown’s way of escaping the routine of his day jobs. He used his experiences to write songs, creating the surreal, eerie sound that would later be associated with Nourished by Time. The critically praised breakthrough first album Erotic Probiotic 2 swiftly followed Marcus’s initial project, Erotic Probiotic, which was released as a two-song EP through the London independent label Scenic Route. It was named the ‘Best New Music’ by Pitchfork when it was first released, and it later appeared on lists of the ‘Best Of 2024’ on Gorilla versus Bear (#1), Pitchfork (#5), The Guardian, The FADER, Paste, and other sites. In the same year, Brown remixed Dry Cleaning’s “Gary Ashby,” supported them on a 20-stop North American tour, and worked with Yaeji on “Happy” off her debut album With A Hammer.
For Nourished By Time, 2024 would prove to be a pivotal year. He signed with XL Recordings and dropped the five-track EP Catching Chickens, which was influenced by the famous Rocky scene in which his trainer
tests his agility by having him pursue and capture a flock of hens. In addition to appearing on ‘Best of 2024’ lists alongside NPR, Pitchfork, The FACE Magazine, Resident Advisor, CLASH, Mixmag, Gorilla versus Bear, and UPROXX, the record landed him on the cover of CRACK Magazine, who named “Hell Of A Ride” their 2024 song. Brown gave a remarkable rendition of “Hell of a Ride” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s #LateShowMeMusic live series, and the song was also included in Spotify’s Best Songs of 2024.
Nourished By Time blew up the live circuit the same year, selling out the Bowery Ballroom in New York, the Echoplex in Los Angeles, and the ICA in London on his first North American headline tour, which included 13 stops. In order to establish himself as one of the most exciting voices in modern music, he also increased the scope of his collaborative endeavors, collaborating with musicians Kacy Hill and Metronomy.
