Named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival dedicated to the Irish deity Lugh, Lúnasa was established in 1997 by members of some of the most prominent Irish bands from the preceding decade. An early review from Folk Roots magazine characterized the group as an “Irish music dream team.” From its inception, the band’s intricate arrangements and distinctive sound redefined the limits of traditional music, captivating audiences globally. The band received widespread acclaim, with The Irish Echo labeling them as the “hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet”; MOJO magazine referred to them as “the new gods of Irish music,” noting that “no one since the Bothies has produced such an exhilarating rhythmic foundation.” Billboard praised them, stating that “anyone who listens cannot help but find them infectious.”
Having sold over 250,000 records and performed more than 2,500 shows in 36 countries, Lúnasa has garnered numerous awards and established itself as one of the most significant bands in the realm of traditional music.
The current tour features music from their Live in Kyoto album, which was recorded live at the Taku Taku club in Kyoto, Japan, in December 2023. “This is top-notch Irish music… A fantastic album, definitely worth acquiring,” stated Living Tradition, UK.
