Lao Tizer, a Colorado-born, Los Angeles-based keyboardist, exemplifies a 21st-century approach to jazz by fluidly mixing numerous musical influences. Tizer was raised on a rich tapestry of classical, world music, and classic rock, but his musical path changed abruptly when he discovered Miles Davis, starting a lifelong love of jazz. He chose real-world experience over formal music instruction, learning from experienced musicians on the bandstand and improving his skills via practical application. Inspired by the Pat Metheny Group, Tizer founded his own ensemble, focusing on structured music with much of room for improvisation.

The Lao Tizer Band has attracted top-tier players, appearing at prominent jazz festivals and venues around the world. With six albums as a leader, Tizer has steadily improved as a writer and conductor, emphasizing a distinct creative character.

Tizer encourages genre-bending, thinking that melodic, groove-oriented music may appeal to a wide audience. He sees a rebirth of youthful listeners in his audience, fueled by performers who push musical boundaries. Tizer’s concept is simple: promote outstanding music and connect with fans, regardless of traditional genre boundaries.
