Jefferson Starship 50th Anniversary Tour, The Guild Theatre, Menlo Park, CA

Jefferson Starship stands as one of the most prominent arena rock bands of the 1970s and 1980s, having achieved 3 platinum and 8 gold records, along with a multitude of Top 40 Billboard singles.

As they commemorate their 50th anniversary, the band attains a remarkable milestone that only a select few bands ever reach.

Established by Paul Kantner in the 1970s, Jefferson Starship was envisioned as a collective of musical pioneers contributing to his grand concept albums and subsequent catalog of rock classics. When the current lineup formed in 2012, with many members having joined in previous years, Kantner could not have foreseen that the band would evolve into the road-conquering entity they are today.

The five members of Jefferson Starship frequently refer to themselves as both a “family” and a “gang,” and this sense of unity is evident in their performances. Throughout the years, they have performed in all 50 U.S. states, across five continents, and in numerous countries. A recent tour in New Zealand was highlighted as one of the band’s favorites, and their live performances continue to deliver an uninterrupted blend of rock hits.

The current lineup of the band features original member David Freiberg, drummer Donny Baldwin (who first joined in 1982), keyboardist Chris Smith (who became a member in 1998), guitarist Jude Gold (who joined in 2012), and singer/guitarist Cathy Richardson (who joined in 2008 after Kantner witnessed her performance with Big Brother and the Holding Company).

As Jefferson Starship marks its 50th anniversary, the band pays tribute to the legacy of Paul Kantner, who passed away in 2016. The spirit of exploration and adventure that he infused into the band continues to resonate in their music and performances. As Gold articulates, “To me, that ‘Paul Kantner thing’—getting on a rocket ship and blasting off into the unknown—is the very essence of Jefferson Starship. And that spirit is very much alive in the band today.
