Chris Dave, Marcus King, Cory Henry, DJ Ginyard, Blue Note Los Angeles, CA

There is a strong possibility that you have heard Chris Dave perform on the drums, even if you were unaware it was him.

Chris Dave
Throughout the past two decades, the Houston-born percussionist, bandleader, and producer has collaborated with some of the most esteemed figures in jazz and R&B, contributing his distinctive drumming style to tracks by D’Angelo, Justin Bieber, The Robert Glasper Experiment, and Adele. Ahmir Questlove Thompson, the bandleader of The Roots, once referred to Dave as “the most dangerous drummer alive,” a description that Dave humorously downplays. “I do not believe that at all,” he remarked during a recent interview. Perhaps this is the reason for his longevity: he allows the work to speak for itself. His music is so impactful that it accomplishes just that.

Marcus King
Marcus King confronts heartache, addiction, and mental health directly through his music. Beneath the vibrato of his voice lies a deep pain, and his delivery is laden with regrets and mistakes steeped in alcohol, often experienced in lonely hotels. The fourth-generation musician from Greenville, SC, who has received a GRAMMY® nomination, began playing guitar at the age of eight, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both guitarists. Traveling thousands of miles as part of ‘The Marcus King Band,’ he has established himself with unmatched performance skills. In 2020, he collaborated with Dan Auerbach to produce his solo debut, El Dorado, which earned a GRAMMY® Award nomination for ‘Best Americana Album.’ In addition to headlining his own shows, he has shared the stage with artists such as Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet, and Nathaniel Rateliff, and has participated in major festivals like Stagecoach. He has also initiated various mental health projects, including a guitar auction in partnership with MusiCares. Now, his upcoming 2024 album, Mood Swings, feels like a moment of baptism, where the waters cleanse a lifetime of sins and degradation, leaving behind a raw, yet authentic primal scream. It seems as though King has poured his raw soul directly from his gut through that broken heart and onto the record, all under the careful guidance of Rick Rubin. This time, his vocals take center stage more than ever, while the guitar he is typically known for takes a supporting role, although there is no lack of impressive shredding. Despite the darkness that surrounds him, there is an undeniable sense of hope conveyed through the power of Marcus’s voice.

In 2021, Cory’s album, Something to Say, received a nomination at the 2022 Grammy Awards for Best Progressive Album, in addition to his contributions as a co-writer and producer on Kanye West’s Donda and Eric Bellinger’s New Light.
