Andy Bell of Erasure, The Guild Theatre, Menlo Park, CA
When you achieve a significant milestone in your life, what is the most effective way to commemorate it? By fully embracing it, reveling in it – indeed, crowning it – with a collection of euphoric songs that have been produced and refined in Nashville, naturally!
The title of Andy Bell’s third solo album, Ten Crowns – much like its cover art, which showcases his head on a shimmering gold coin – brings a smile to Andy’s face today: “It sounds like a pub!” he quips. However, beneath that title lies a collection of ten songs that radiate dazzling, joyous pop, drawing inspiration from both the dancefloor and gospel, and completed in the year he celebrated his 60th birthday.
The title also has a connection to tarot, he explains: “The ten crowns on the tree of life, which is a very significant card to possess. And I had just gotten my crowns on my teeth done in Miami while I was contemplating a title!” he chuckles.
Following Erasure’s last two remarkable albums – 2020’s The Neon and its 2021 companion piece Day-Glo (Based On A True Story), which featured intriguing experimental reinterpretations of The Neon’s tracks – Bell dedicated himself to songwriting with Dave Audé, a producer with whom he has maintained a close relationship for over a decade. Dave first met Andy while DJing at a club in 2010, which was operated by a mutual friend, Stephen Moss, who later became Andy’s partner and husband (Stephen and Andy reside together in London and Atlanta).
Collaborating with someone other than Vince Clarke introduces a fresh set of dynamics, Andy notes – although Erasure fans should be aware that, after forty years, they continue to thrive and have recently reunited to commence work on the next Erasure album. “I still enjoy collaborating with Vince, but when you’re writing with another individual, it’s akin to the experience of traveling to a different country or relocating to America. You can essentially reinvent who you are, becoming a completely new person.”
