A Flock Of Seagulls, The Guild Theatre, Menlo Park, CA

Renowned for their uniquely styled haircuts as much as for their hit single “I Ran (So Far Away),” A Flock of Seagulls stands out as one of the notorious one-hit wonders of the new wave period.

Emerging from the synth-driven and impeccably fashionable new romantic movement, A Flock of Seagulls exhibited a somewhat robotic quality and arrived slightly too late to be considered true new romantics; however, their polished dance-pop sound was undeniably influenced by this fleeting movement. The band gained significant exposure thanks to MTV’s extensive airing of the “I Ran” music video during the summer of 1982.

Hair stylist Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards) established A Flock of Seagulls alongside his brother Ali (drums) and fellow hairdresser Frank Maudsley (bass) in 1980, later incorporating guitarist Paul Reynolds a few months afterward. The group released their debut EP on Cocteau Records in early 1981, which, despite not charting, saw its lead track, “Telecommunication,” become an underground sensation in Euro-disco and new wave venues. By the end of that year, the band secured a major-label deal with Jive, and their self-titled debut album was launched in the spring of 1982. “I Ran (So Far Away)” was issued as the album’s first single, and MTV quickly embraced its visually striking video, showcasing long shots of Mike Score and his signature, flowing hair. The single ascended into the American Top Ten, propelling the album alongside it. In the United Kingdom, “I Ran” did not reach the Top 40, but “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” achieved number ten later that year; in the United States, this single became a Top 40 success in 1983, following the peak of “Space Age Love Song” at number 30. “Wishing” was featured on the band’s second album, Listen (1983), which enjoyed moderate success.

The band released the album The Story of a Young Heart in 1984, which unfortunately did not yield any hit singles. Following the album’s release, Reynolds departed and was succeeded by Gary Steadnin; additionally, keyboardist Chris Chryssaphis joined the group. This new configuration was presented in 1986’s Dream Come True. However, shortly after this release, the band disbanded. In 1989, Mike Score formed a new version of A Flock of Seagulls, which produced the single “Magic” and toured across the U.S.A. The band continued to perform internationally, albeit with significant changes in its lineup, and in 1996, they released a new album titled The Light at the End of the World.
