From Brush to Fabric with Kuniharu Yoshida, JACCC, Los Angeles, CA
Discover the enduring craft of shodo, the art of Japanese calligraphy, in this engaging noren-making workshop led by Kuniharu “Kuni” Yoshida, a renowned calligrapher and the director of the Shodo for Little Tokyo program at JACCC.
This session goes beyond a mere introduction to shodo; it invites you to craft your own noren, a traditional Japanese fabric divider commonly displayed in doorways, windows, or rooms. Norens provide privacy, can indicate a welcome or the separation of spaces, and function as both decorative elements and significant cultural artifacts.
Each year, the Shodo for Little Tokyo program concludes with a unique project. This year, 30 hand-painted noren created by community seniors will be featured in a breathtaking hanging installation at MISE 店 from early June until mid-August. As you paint each character on the fabric during the exhibition, you will immerse yourself in the history, elegance, and contemporary significance of Japanese calligraphy, under the guidance of a master whose teachings are rooted in decades of experience and community involvement. All materials are provided, and your handcrafted noren, measuring 27″ x 34″, will be yours to take home and showcase.
Spaces are limited for each session. Register now to learn from Kuni and take home a piece of living heritage.
