The Nature Gardens, Natural History Museum, Los Angeles, CA

The National Museum of Natural History’s botanical wonderland is home to a diverse collection of plants that attract birds, butterflies, lizards, squirrels, and humans!

A decade ago, on June 9, 2013, we inaugurated the Nature Gardens for public access. We removed an asphalt parking lot and introduced 600 species of both native and nonnative plants to establish this 3.5-acre area, reflecting the semi-arid Mediterranean climate of Southern California. This project was a remarkable collaboration between NHM scientists and the landscape architecture firm, Mia Lehrer and Associates, who crafted the design of the Nature Gardens, serving as a magnificent tribute to the Museum’s centennial celebration.

“The Nature Gardens were created as an invitation for local wildlife, through meticulously chosen plantings, to inhabit a new green area where both visitors and scientists can explore and engage with our urban ecosystem and gain insights into the incredible biodiversity that surrounds us,” states Daniel Feldman, Senior Manager of Horticulture, who is responsible for overseeing the Nature Gardens.

Encountering wildlife within the Nature Gardens can inspire individuals. While we may never fully understand what this inspiration may lead to, the motivation that people take with them significantly influences their lives and our collective environment.
