Empowering Women of Color Open Mic, La Pena Cultural Center, Berkeley, CA
We have missed you. Join us for an evening of live music, spoken word, radical storytelling, and stunning performances that inspire and celebrate the creativity of women of color.
This cherished open mic represents a longstanding partnership between La Peña Cultural Center and UC Berkeley’s Women of Color Initiative, serving as the inaugural event of the Empowering Women of Color Conference (EWOCC) – one of the longest-running conferences in the nation that addresses the needs and experiences of womxn of color. Since its inception in 1985, EWOCC has united activists, artists, scholars, and community leaders to promote intersectional feminist movements grounded in justice and solidarity.
Anchored in Black feminism and collective joy, this open mic provides a sacred space for all individuals who connect with and experience life through the lens of womanhood – encompassing body, spirit, identity, or lived experience, whether past, present, future, or fluid – to share their stories and be acknowledged.
Everyone is invited to participate, but this event purposefully highlights the experiences, narratives, and expressions of women* of color. Join us in being part of an uplifting community rooted in love, art, and liberation.
*The term “women” is used inclusively to encompass all who experience or connect with womanhood – through identity, spirit, or lived experience – whether past, present, future, or fluid – while respecting the diverse expressions of gender, including those of trans and non-binary individuals.
