Fresno Chaffee Zoo, California | A Wild Adventure in Central California

Featured Events

The Fresno Chaffee Zoo, located in the heart of California’s Central Valley, is a 53-acre animal sanctuary that has delighted tourists since 1929. What started as a small animal exhibit in Roeding Park has grown into a modern, conservation-focused zoo accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). With more than 190 species and creative habitats, the zoo provides an immersive experience that teaches and inspires visitors about wildlife and conservation.

History & Evolution of the Zoo

Early Beginnings (1929-1960s)

1929: It began as a small menagerie in Roeding Park with deer, monkeys, and birds.

1940s-50s: Added large cats and bears, becoming a popular local attraction.

1965: Renamed after Dr. Paul Chaffee, a well-known biologist and former zoo director.

Modern Transformation (2000s-Present)

In 2008, major renovations began with the inauguration of African Adventure.

In 2015, USA Today readers voted it the “#1 Zoo in the U.S.”

In 2023, the zoo opened Kingdoms of Asia, its most ambitious exhibit.
