History of Warner Grand Theatre in Los Angeles

Opening & Design

The Warner Grand Theatre, built by Warner Brothers and the first theater in the South Bay with sound, opened on January 20, 1931. B. Marcus Priteca designed it, while Anthony Heinsbergen created the interiors.

Name Changes & Films

Originally a movie theater, it was renamed the San Pedro Theatre in 1937 and later the Stanley Warner San Pedro Theatre in 1956. By the 1970s, it was known as the Teatro Juarez, which screened Spanish-language films.

Preservation & Modern Use

In 1996, the City of Los Angeles purchased the theater. It was designated a Historic-Cultural Monument in 1982 and listed on the National Register in 1999. The Grand Vision Foundation now controls its preservation, and it offers a variety of modern events. Renovations will begin in 2024.

Stage & Technical Features: The proscenium stage measures 50 feet in width and 32 feet in depth. The fire curtain showcases a painting of a castle by the sea.

Renovations and Transformations Over the Years

Early 2000s

In 2004, new HVAC systems were installed, and in 2006, the chairs were replaced with reproductions of the original fabric.

Mid-2010s

The theater’s original fire curtain was unearthed in 2014. In 2018, the “Love the Lobby” campaign brought back the ceiling designs.

Major Renovations: 2024-2026

The theater closed in January 2024 for a $4.5 million renovation. The upgrades, funded by the City of Los Angeles and supported by the Grand Vision Foundation, include:
