Early years
Founded in Chicago in 1990 by a group of ImprovOlympic students who trained under Del Close. Their signature show, ASSSSCAT, gained popularity.
Expansion
UCB relocated to New York in 1996 and opened its first theater in 1999 in a former strip club. In 2005, UCB expanded to Los Angeles, opening a space at the Tamarind Theatre. A second LA venue, on Sunset Boulevard, opened in 2014 but shuttered in 2020 owing to the epidemic.
Recent history
Mike McAvoy and Jimmy Miller purchased UCB in 2022, with Elysian Park’s backing. They reopened the Franklin facility, which still hosts nightly shows.
Legacy
The theater is still a staple of the comedy scene, with notable graduates like Adam McKay and Fred Armisen.
