The Independent Shakespeare Co. (ISC) is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit theatrical group dedicated to making classical theater more accessible to everyone. David Melville and Melissa Chalsma founded ISC in 1998, and it has since become well-known for its colorful Shakespearean plays and commitment to community participation.
Origins and Mission
David Melville and Melissa Chalsma, both experienced performers, met in 1995 while performing in a Hamlet play on Broadway. Their combined enthusiasm for Shakespeare inspired them to create ISC in New York City in 1998. In 2001, they moved the company to Los Angeles with the goal of providing free, high-quality classical theater to a wide range of spectators. ISC’s objective is based on the notion that theater should be a social experience available to everybody, regardless of socioeconomic condition.
Main Attractions at Independent Shakespeare Co
Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival
ISC has presented the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival at Griffith Park’s Old Zoo every year since 2010. This beloved summer event features free performances of Shakespeare’s plays, drawing crowds of up to 3,000 per night. Participants are urged to bring picnic blankets and enjoy the theater under the stars.
Original Productions and Studio Work
Beyond Shakespeare, ISC creates original works and modern adaptations. Notably, the company performed Strange Eventful History, a play co-written by David Melville that combines Shakespeare’s historical plays into a single storyline.
Educational and Community Programs
The business provides workshops, classes, and school programs that engage kids in classical literature and performance. These initiatives attempt to instill a passion of theater in young people and provide opportunities for rising performers.
Future Developments
ISC is working with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks to build a permanent stage in Griffith Park’s Old Zoo location. This development will improve the festival experience and strengthen ISC’s position in the community.
