History of Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles

Founding: Jamie Flam launched Dynasty Typewriter in January 2018, which Vanessa Ragland co-directs.

Building history: The venue is situated at the Hayworth Theatre, which has a long history:

  • Stiles O. Clements designed the Masque Theatre for vaudeville events, and it first opened in 1926.
  • In 1950, Renamed the Vagabond Theatre, a cinema that screened art and British films.
  • It reopened in 2006 as the Hayworth Theatre, which housed the New American Theatre.

Modern Revival: Jenji Kohan purchased the main theater space in 2013, and Jamie Flam refurbished it in 2017 to become a comedy hub. The moniker “Dynasty Typewriter” refers to Flam’s family company.

Current status: By 2025, the facility will be a thriving component of the Los Angeles comedy scene, hosting global performers and filming specials.
