History of the USS Midway
Construction & Commissioning (1943–1945)
Launched on March 20, 1945, just days before World War II ended.
Named after the Battle of Midway (1942), a pivotal moment in the Pacific War.
The ship was first deployed in 1947 as the class’s leading ship.
Service Highlights (1945–1992)
During the Cold War, they served as a deterrent in the Mediterranean and Pacific regions.
Served in combat missions during the Vietnam War, from 1965 to 1973.
Operation Desert Storm (1991) involved airstrikes against Iraq.
Decommissioned on April 11, 1992, after 47 years of service.
Transformation into a Museum (2004)
Moved to San Diego in 2003 after a 4-month journey from Washington.
The museum opened on June 7, 2004, marking the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

There is a parking area near to the ship that costs between $10 and $20.
To get to Seaport Village via trolley, take the Green Line.
