History of Shadelands Ranch

The story of Shadelands Ranch begins in the mid-19th century. The land was originally part of the vast Mexican land grants that covered the region.

The Walker Family

The ranch is named for Hiram Penniman Walker, a pioneer who settled in the area in the 1850s. Walker was a farmer and rancher who built the original homestead on the property. The name “Shadelands” comes from the shady groves of oak trees that dotted the property.

The Boyd Family

In 1903, William M. Boyd, a prominent San Francisco businessman, purchased the property. Boyd built the existing ranch house as a summer home for his family. The Boyds were wealthy and influential, and their home reflected their status.

The House

The 1903 farmhouse is a beautiful example of Colonial Revival architecture. It features a wraparound porch, large rooms, and period details. The house was designed for comfortable country living.

Preservation

In the 1970s, as Walnut Creek grew, the property faced development pressure. Concerned citizens formed the Walnut Creek Historical Society to save the ranch. The City of Walnut Creek acquired the property, and the Historical Society restored the house and opened it as a museum.
