History & Mission
The museum was opened in 1996 in a modest strip mall. In 2004, a capital campaign funded the relocation to a historic downtown building. The new space opened in January 2005. It presently covers 13,000 square feet and has over 25 exhibit spaces. On July 1, 2025, it amalgamated with Children’s Resource & Referral of Santa Barbara County. The Children’s Resource & Referral Discovery Museum is a new institution that will expand family services.
The objective is to promote youth-inspired learning. Exhibits focus on the valley, the world, and beyond. It welcomes more than 34,000 tourists each year. The “please touch” concept promotes self-discovery.
